Why it is the default
For Shopify brands, Klaviyo is the default email and SMS platform for one simple reason: the Shopify integration is materially better than any alternative. Customer data flows in cleanly, segments update accurately, and the platform-native predictive metrics (next order date, churn probability) are actually based on real behavior, not guesswork.
This matters because the operating leverage on email is huge — well-run flows can deliver 25–35% of a brand’s revenue with minimal ongoing labor. Getting the foundation right matters more than picking the cheapest tool.
Where Sage AI is useful — and where it is not
Sage AI is Klaviyo’s newer AI layer, and it is more useful than we initially expected:
- Flow generation: Describe a flow (“4-touch welcome series for a skincare brand, premium positioning”) and Sage drafts the structure plus initial copy. Saves about 60% of the upfront work.
- Subject line generation: Solid drafts, A/B test the AI variants against your manual ones.
- Segment building: Natural language → segment definitions works well for non-technical operators.
What it is not: a replacement for thinking about your customer. The AI will happily generate a generic welcome series. Building one that actually reflects your brand voice still requires a human who understands the audience.
Honest cost reality
Klaviyo’s pricing scales with active profiles, and “active” includes a lot of low-value contacts you may not realize you have. Audit your suppression lists and clean inactive segments quarterly. The platform is worth the price — but only if you are not paying for dead weight.
